Woman in coat – Top 5 Dermal Filler Myths DebunkedA few weeks ago we brought to you a post debunking the top 4 most common Botox myths. Since then, we’ve realised that for every Botox myth pervading the collective subconscious of the masses, there is also a Dermal Filler counterpart.

And so today we’re going to redress these incidents of general ignorance and bust open the most common Dermal Filler myths, replacing them with the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Top 5 Dermal Filler Myths Debunked

1.     Botox is a Type of Dermal Filler

No. This is simply incorrect.

Botox is used to relax the muscles and thereby reduce the formation of wrinkles and lines that are caused by age or by laughing, frowning and other facial expressions. Dermal Fillers, on the other hand, actually work to fill these pre-exiting lines, furrows and folds, adding volume where it has been lost.

In addition, Dermal Fillers attract water to the injected areas, moisturising the skin tissues, and also encourage the natural renewal of collagen.

Dermal Fillers and Botox are often used in conjunction with one another, and indeed some of the very best results are seen like this. However, the two treatments are not one and the same thing at all.

2.     Dermal Fillers Are Permanent

Some Dermal Fillers are indeed advertised as being permanent, however, most will typically last between 6 and 12 months depending on the patient. Indeed, far from being permanent, patients who make use of Dermal Fillers need regular follow-up treatments to ensure a lasting result.

However, some first-time users express concern at the prevailing myth that they will be “stuck” with whatever results, even if they aren’t happy with it. This simply isn’t true. If, for whatever reason, you are not satisfied with your appearance following a treatment, the effects of Dermal Fillers will eventually wear off.

Indeed, the reversal process can even be accelerated through the use of an agent called hyaluronidase, which will break up the hyaluronic acid contained within Dermal Fillers, thusly reversing the effects.

3.     Dermal Fillers Result in the So-called “Trout Pout”

Whilst it’s true that overuse of Dermal Fillers can result in undesirable effects – and there are a number of high-profile celebrities who have made significant contributions to this concern  – an experienced practitioner will never allow this to happen to you.

“Less is more” when it comes to Dermal Fillers and cosmetic treatments in general. A correct use of Dermal Fillers will result in a subtle lip enhancement that is very much beautifying and desirable. Indeed, it is for this reason that you must always avoid the “cosmetic cowboys” and seek out a qualified and professional provider for all your treatments.

4.     Dermal Fillers Are Painful

Dermal Fillers are administered by injection. As such, a little discomfort is often experienced, but to describe the procedure as “painful” is not true.

In fact, even the mild discomfort that is experienced is negligible. Dermal Fillers result in zero downtime for users – which means that following your treatment you will be able to continue with your normal daily routine (even go back to work in the afternoon or evening if necessary).

A little bruising and/or redness may be experienced, and sometimes small amounts of tenderness or itching. This is all completely normal and in no sense debilitating. 5.     Everyone Will Know I’ve Had Dermal Fillers

Again, the key to success with Dermal Fillers is to source an experienced and professional provider who will not overuse the injectable.

The administering of Dermal Fillers – and indeed Botox – is a highly-skilled art, the goal of which is to provide subtle enhancements, yet retain a natural look in the patient. An experienced practitioner will know exactly how deep to inject, how much product should be used, and what type of needle will produce the best results.

Indeed, in preparation for the treatment, you will first undergo a consultation whereby your practitioner will discuss with you exactly what you are trying to achieve, inform you as to what is possible, and advise you every step of the way. If you want to retain a natural look and simply appear more youthful and refreshed, then indeed a Dermal Filler course of treatments administered by a professional is the perfect solution, and your appearance will not be so dramatically altered that everyone around you will know that you’ve had work done. Indeed, subtlety is key, and less, as always, is more when it comes to cosmetics.
